BEHIND THE BRAND

MEET THE ARTIST & LEARN ABOUT THE ART
Hi! My name is Athena Correa, and I am the voice behind the Angelz brand that stands before you today. I have created this clothing line, followed by this website, as a part of my final IA project. What follows, in order to educate you a little more about this brand, is my artist statement...
For my project I have created a virtual line of clothing. This collection includes a variety of unique pieces such as a pair of jeans, an oversized jean jacket, t-shirts, crew necks and a matching tracksuit. Each piece was created by customizing existing clothing, in order to match each other, and connect with each other. Each piece of clothing has the same pastel tie-dye look, with multiple designs referencing to angels and heaven, in an attempt for the collection to follow a fresh, clean and vintage look and feel. I had previously designed a jacket following a devilish theme, therefore this line was meant to contrast my previous design.
We live in a generation where style, fashion and aesthetics is highly valued and looked at, and it is important to many people. In the present day, vintage fashion is very in and many people are following vintage clothing trends. I thought designing a clothing line, in an effective and affordable way, could have been intriguing to the present generation, and could have perhaps been inspiring for designs to follow. I created this clothing line in an attempt to challenge myself, but also challenge the works of the fashion industry, and suggest different ideas.
I designed this clothing line for this specific project to suggest the idea that design should be considered art just as much as a painting or a sculpture. I am very aware that the overall design industry has struggled as being seen as a means of art, but I truly believe that anything with creative motives should be considered art. I have virtually designed these pieces of clothing in order for them to be looked at as works of art. I consider my clothing line wearable art, and it is through my designs that I intend to prove this to my viewers.
I chose to base my designs with a pastel tie-dye pattern because in recent fashion, many influencers have been beginning to wear tracksuits which are coloured in pastel tie-dye patterns. I have always been very attracted to pastel colours, and seeing that this has been in recent trends, I was inspired to use it as a part of my designs. I then decided to pair the pastel look with designs and drawings such as angels, cloud, references to heaven and the renaissance time period, halos, wings, etc. I chose this style for my collection because I thought that it fit very well with pastel, and it created a clean and fresh vintage look. I wanted to make something that would peak others’ interest, but I mostly wanted to make something that I would enjoy making, a line that reflects my style, with an extra vintage aspect, and lastly I wanted to make a line that I would consider wearing.
Overall, my collection line is meant to reflect contemporary fashion, with a vintage aspect to it. Its designs come with versatile use, and the collection includes a variety of clothing types for the average, everyday wear. I hope that this line gives off a fresh and clean look, but also comes off as funky, different and unique. And by inserting my line into an art exhibition, I hope to show my viewers that design and fashion can be considered art, and clothing can be considered wearable art.
